Genetics, Lifestyle and Health with Dr James Chestnut

On 14 January 2008, the CAA (SA) hosted an event featuring one of the foremost experts on wellness in chiropractic,Canadian chiropractor Dr James Chestnut. His message was very well received by doctors and patients alike.

Nearly 400 patients from several chiropractic practices around Adelaide descended on the Star theatre in Hilton to hear Dr Chestnut discuss the latest concepts in health care relating to the genetics vs lifestyle debate.

The message hit home with simple yet powerful truths.

A key question asked; Whether research animals got healthier or sicker when removed from their natural environment and were transplanted into an artificial environment, fed processed food and had their activity levels restricted. The answer? SICKER EVERY TIME. No surprises so far.

The problem comes when we consider ourselves as humans. We live in a completely artificial environment, exercise infrequently at best and more often than not eat food that is full of preservatives and additives. Are we surprised that the biggest burdens on our society in terms of health care are the lifestyle diseases (Heart disease, cancer, diabetes etc)? So what do we do about it? Dr Chestnut is an avid proponent of The innate lifestyle. He has published a number of books relating to movement, diet and state of mind, establishing the Eat Well, Move Well, Think Well trademark.

The audience was left with some simple practical tips on how to get started on moving towards a more innate lifestyle. These included:

• Eat Fresh Fibre First with every meal
• Incorporate Activity into Work, family and social life (ie meet for a walk instead of for lunch)
• Always Shop Full. You’re less likely to make impulsive choices than if you’re hungry
• Judge your choice on how you’ll feel AFTER the choice (ie eat donuts only when standing naked in front of a mirror)
• Never begin or end a day without self talk.

Everyone was suitably impressed by Dr Chestnut's knowledge and clever analogies. CAASA looks forward to continuing to present top quality speakers in the future to strengthen our position as leaders in the wellness field.
